The five-piece collective – consisting of Tanzanian multi-instrumentalist Msafiri Zawose, producer Photay and Penya members Magnus P.I, Lilli Elina and Jimmy le Messurier – is an artistic pursuit founded on community; a space in which to harness the transformative power of connection. Translated from Swahili, ‘wema’ means kindness and benevolence – virtues that lie at the core of the project, and are reflected in the group’s world-embracing approach to music. “WEMA is a state of gratitude and belief, without sorrow or grief. It’s about giving your entire heart,” Msafiri declares.

The self-titled album is an intoxicating, dancefloor-indebted blend of traditional Tanzanian music, Afro-Latin rhythms and experimental electronic music, with the majority of lyrics sung in Swahili and Spanish. It’s a smorgasbord of sounds, moods and textures that call on the very ethos of the band; the pursuit of cohesion and togetherness in a fractured world. Through this lens, WEMA is a near-spiritual listen, invoking the sacred sounds of their global influences. The tape-delayed vocal samples and sparse industrial clangs of Kande are reminiscent of the kind of deconstructed beats you might find in a closing club set. Stepping into his musical world is a multi-sensory experience, one where smooth grooves, wonky rhythms, dreamy melodies and immersive atmospheres coalesce to form their own sphere. “Sound as vision,” says Bright of the audio aesthetic he relates to and aims for. “Music you can bite into.”

Based in the Hampshire countryside and an illustrator by day, Bright’s world is often a dual one but one where elements overlap and inform one another. “I spend a lot of my day creating things visually and everyday life can be an assault on the senses,” says Bright. “Evening is my quiet time; time for my ears. Invariably I’m inspired by the things that people and creatures do in the dark.”

This creative duality extends beyond just the visual and the music too. It’s found deep rooted in the music itself, which explores a mix between lo-fi and hi-fi, possessing an intimate bedroom recording-like quality but with production that sounds glowing and golden. Similarly, the sunny sheen found in the music - via a kind of psychedelic pop meets electronic soul - is one born from dichotomy. “I feel at home in the deep south of England,” he says. “I’m in the middle of nowhere with lots of green land, fresh air and head space. I feel like the sunshine in the south in the summer months really reflects in my music. The latter track pays tribute to the Ibiza beach of the same name, whereas “Dancing with the Birds” - a delicate exploration of pastoral folk - is a nod to one of Britain’s most beloved treasures. “It’s based on a late night walk having just watched a David Attenborough documentary, featuring these beautiful birds that have a crazy mating dance. I love his documentaries and I was listening to a lot of Bert Jansch. The next night I had this vision of dancing birds come into my mind.”

Elsewhere Headroom touches upon, in Bright’s own words, 60’s sunshine doo-wop, mutant disco, and mystic mountain top vibes. It’s an album that explores a great deal yet even amidst its dualities it retains a sense of cohesion throughout. It’s a mixture that Bright feels pleased to have managed to juggle so seamlessly. “I think there is a good balance around experimentation on the record - a nice mix between fun and substance.”

For the artist Dominik Eulberg, nature has always been a source of inspiration, a place of strength and retreat. Until then, Birmingham-born Kemistry had spent most of her tender years studying as a make-up artist in Sheffield while Storm was studying radiology in Oxford. The pair discovered acid house in London, partied at illegal warehouse raves, and at the end of the 80s stumbled upon ‘Rage’, Fabio and Grooverider’s legendary and influential club night at Heaven, which can be legitimately dubbed as the origin of the entire Breakbeat/Jungle/Hardcore/Drum ‘n’ Bass movement. This is where they decided to dedicate their future entirely to music – as DJs.

They watched DJs at work in clubs, went and bought records and saved up for their first turntables. Goldie, who at the time was living off his graffiti art (he was and remains one of Englands best taggers) decided to support them by putting up the money for a couple of Technics MKII in 1991. During the same year the trio started a radio show ‘Mack Three’ with pirate station Touchstone FM – every Sunday from 6-9 KEMISTRY & STORM mixed along to Goldie’s rapping, under the pseudonym of Mac Daddy G.

When KEMISTRY & STORM collaborated with Groove Connection, the agency run by Fabio and Grooverider, things soon started happening – suddenly they were no longer on the dance floor or next to the decks – they were actually DJing at them along with their heroes Ray Keith, Jumping Jack Frost and of course Fabio and Grooverider – a dream come true.

In 1994 Goldie founded the record label Metalheadz with Doc Scott, but signing with the major ffrr in the same year meant that he neglected his own label somewhat – with consequently poor record sales. KEMISTRY & STORM soon changed all that as they joined Metalheadz and immediately took over press, bookings and A&R duties. Thus the duo made a substantial contribution to the success of Hidden Agenda, Lemon D., Peshay and especially Photek. (For the last two years they’ve no longer been involved with the day to day running of the label, but still represent it with their ‘Sound of Metalheadz’ and as long-term resident DJs of the Meatlheadz nights in the Blue Note.)

Due to their talent, commitment and experience, KEMISTRY & STORM have recently been able to play in the league of DJs who ‘for quite some time now have been constantly reappearing in clubs where they are virtually a permanent fixture, always have a friendly word to say and know that it’s gonna be a good party, which is not just reflected by the state of your wallet the next morning’ (De-Bug). Since KEMISTRY & STORM’s existence lies at the cutting edge of Drum ‘n’ Bass they can clearly get their hands on the hottest dubplates and VIP mixes of the most official tracks, and ‘when they are put away in the record case, it can be really heart-wrenching, like the end of a beautiful friendship’ ( Jayne Storm)

The Who’s Who of British Drum ‘n’ Bass producers abounds on the forthcoming DJ Kicks, and with Goldie, Dom + Roland, Digital, DJ Die, Johnny L and J Majik, features old friends of KEMISTRY & STORM. He arrived on the scene suddenly; nobody knew who he was or had heard anything about him. His name is Tiga, just Tiga. Why is he following in the footsteps of artists like Carl Craig and Playgroup, who since 1995 have proven their DJing skills in the electronic universe of the DJ-Kicks series?

The first answer has a family connection and goes way back to the time of Tiga´s childhood. “When my father was working as a DJ, he had to use cassette decks and his job more or less comprised perfecting the transition from one track to the next. But I learned from him the importance of the structure of a set and how such planning can be the difference between heaven and hell for you and the audience!“ In saying that, Tiga isn’t the kind of person who constantly gripes about his daily problems – he just solves them using his own solutions and personal initiative. When he couldn’t find a decent source of vinyl in his home town, he opened his own record shop, DNA Records, organized his own parties and, since the early nineties he’s been manning the turntables at least twice a week – sometimes in front of a selected audience during the Paris Fashion Week and sometimes in a dirty cellar somewhere in eastern Berlin. At the end of 1999, he founded his own label, Turbo Recordings, from the proceeds of the sale of his club. Apart from a few 12“ releases, Turbo Recordings has mainly released CDs and artist albums, because that’s where Tiga sees the singular future for modern electronic musicians. Alongside his responsibilities as label manager and producer, Tiga is still a DJ with his own particular ideas about the job. “Sometimes, I almost feel guilty about how much time I devote to searching out good records. I personally take the job of DJ very seriously, but I unfortunately don’t often get that impression from some other DJs, who just spin a few records at random. DJing is really a full time job and I’ve been doing it constantly now for more than eleven years. Even if I had a month off, I would use it to have a good listen to my entire record collection!“

In contrast to earlier mix CDs, Tiga has included all kinds of styles in this DJ-Kicks set and has nevertheless managed to retain a nightclub dance context. A track from 2Raumwohnung thus leads into a track from Traffic Signs and the disco anthem, “So…“, from the legendary group Soft Cell meets minimalist techno of Antonelli Electric and Tiga & Zyntherius’ “Dying in Beauty” is woven into Codec & Flexor´s “Time Has Changed”. A little later, the Märtini Brös straight out of Berlin follow on from Charles Manier (USA). The CD ends with a version of Felix da Housecat´s “Madame Hollywood”, remixed by Tiga himself and, of course, featuring his own vocal talents.

Tiga more or less followed his instincts when preparing for the DJ-Kicks set, but he does admit to having some basic rules. “As a result of my experience, I rarely specially prepare my set or practice anything. But I always know what the first record will be, as this record often determines what follows for the rest of the evening and can work like a kind of calling card. And I always think about my last record or the one I should play at the peak of my set. My record collection is sorted according to the energy level of each record – the chilled-out tunes at the front and the big bombs at the back!“

The cover version of Corey Hart´s “Sunglasses At Night”, which was produced by Tiga and Jori Hulkkonen from Finland, has become one of the biggest crowd-pleasers of them all. The single entered several top-ten charts around the world and reactivated the discussion about the revival of the eighties sound. Tiga himself has no problem with success or the hype that surrounds him. “I’ve always built in records from the eighties into my DJ sets and some of them have also had a great influence on the way I produce tracks. Every artist finds inspiration in the past, from which he draws strength in the present. In this sense, I have remained true to myself. It only becomes a trap if you, as an artist, stop looking to the future. That can happen to any musician during his career, but if you just keep letting the past repeat itself like a loop, then you really have a problem!“

This is how DJs like Tiga in particular, as a result of their diverse range of skills, have come to play on the whole spectrum of music scene. Experience from past mix CDs, like “Mixed Emotions” (2000) and “American Gigolo” (2001), and a succession of label compilations, like the Turbo Studio Sessions, has found its way onto his mix for the DJ-Kicks series, as well as the exclusive track, “Man Hrdina“, which will appear beforehand as an EP of its own. “Come what may, I wanted to make sure that the sound quality for DJ-Kicks was more than just good, because I was working with some digital and some analog sources. That’s why I spent my entire advance on new equipment and tried out several different mixing desks to get the best possible result. The finished set was therefore recorded using three turntables and with the aid of a loop player.“

But we still haven’t answered the question, what impression do we have of this guy called Tiga? In 2001, Playgroup released its debut album that instantly was considered a classic. The idea behind the album was simple: Take some disco and boogie beats, leave the odd ironic twist behind and think more about making a spirit of eclecticism it´s central tenet. Mashing up funk, punk, hip hop and new wave into a funky whole and adding guest appearances by reggae legend Shinehead, indie pioneer Edwyn Collins or Le Tigre´s Kathleen Hanna , Trevor Jackson created a colourful album full of positive and uplifting music that both had a pop appeal and an underground feel.

Though his name has largely stayed in the backroom until recently, Trevor Jackson has been around for quiet a while. In fact, he´s been involved in so many projects, that he could be considered as one of UKs leading grandmasters of cool. He began his musical career in the late 80s by designing record sleeves. Trevor Jackson designed for Champion records and 4th & Broadway for such artists like Eric B. & Rakim and the Jungle Brothers, he designed the trademark covers for the Stereo MCs, Raze and Todd Tery. In the meantime, he already played music with his C-64 home computer and a 4 track tape machine. In the early 90s Trevor Jackson was the brain child of hip hop act The Brotherhood, which led him into creating more music and to start a label called Bite It!. Attention from major labels began, commissioning him to remix their most imporant acts. Calling himself The Underdog, his remixes were highly anticipated and well respected. Via his remix work, the Brotherhood eventually signed to Virgin in 1996. The Brotherhoods first album “Elementalz” was cited by many as “The greatest UK rap album ever” but eventually the band split and Jackson embarked on producing The Emperor´s New Clothes for Acid Jazz . To his disappointment, the label decided not to release the album so Jackson took a time out to decide what to do next.

In 1996, Trevor Jackson started a brand new label called Output. The label has released over 40 releases to date. Fridge and Four Tet began on Output as well as Paris´s Black Strobe and Atom Heart´s LB project. As The Underdog Jackson remixed U2, UNKLE with Ian Brown and Thom Yorke, Run DMC and Massive Attack amongst many others. With Bristol´s original wild bunch, Trevor Jackson traveled Europe on the 1998 tour. DJing since the mid 80´s, Trevor was a regular at the legendary Mo´Wax Blue Note sessions “Dusted” and since the release of his Playgroup album has started playing on the global club circuit.

Naturally, for !K7 it was the perfect time to ask the man for a “DJ Kicks” mix. For it, Trevor Jackson came up with a selection that reflects many of his musical influences from the past years. You´ll find all time heroes like the Human League or KC Flightt as well as current hotsters like Smith n´ Hack or Metro Area. There´s New Yorks no-wave revivalists The Rapture close to original punk funksters The Flying Lizards, Manchesters Jay Walk and the great I:Cube Mix of Ana Rago. Trevor Jackson blends music from more than two decades of club and dance culture into a superbly funked up mix. Confined to little or no definitive style his music has always been in a constant state of metamorphosis, simultaneously breaching new waters and staying true to his unique spirit of musical openness and his obvious passion for sound design.

Aptly joking that his DJ KiCKs selection reflects his style to “not really have a style” it’s evident that Ring is more than aware that his contribution to the series might look ‘intelligent’ on paper – with the tracklist aligning variant artists like Oval, Autechre, Ripperton and Thom Yorke – but given his recent tour at the start of the year, it’s simply a representation of where he’s at in terms of modern music. “I didn’t want to make this kind of ‘smart’ mix, that’s eclectic and sounds like it’s done ‘on purpose;’ but I need to do different things to keep myself motivated,” Ring explains. “At first I wanted to make a collection of influences, all kinds of old songs but then sometimes with those mixes it’s hard to keep some kind of flow and they’re just not very easy to listen to, so I ended up using good new music; music that almost gave me hope that there’s more out there than boring minimal techno.” The Apparat contribution is as stylized as the preceding mixes in the series from Kode 9 and James Holden; with Ring embracing the opportunity to create a mix that represents both his personality and his brave take on ‘club’ music. With an incredibly prevalent talent for manipulation of both tempos and melodies, Ring includes tracks from a handful of dubstep producers like Dutch producer Martyn – whose ‘Miniluv’ provides a glorious rhythmic propulsion when under-layed beneath Patrice Baumel’s ‘Sub’ – and Ramadanman’s ‘Tempest’ – whose melody all but dissipates at the optimum moment – layering and blending them perfectly with tracks from across an array of genres from Autechre’s percussive white noise to Oval’s erratically colourful sound slices or the echoed clicks of Phon.o’s ‘Intervall.’

“A mix needs a bit of dynamic,’ he states. “There were these weirder things I wanted to use, like this Four Tet remix (of Born Ruffian’s ‘I Need A Life’) and then there are some tracks i had to use as tools to glue it all togehter. The way I used the Martyn track is more of a tool to adjust the Patrice Baumel track dynamically to the following ones. But most of the songs are in there for musical reasons. All these artists have their own sound signatures and manage to inject that space into every new song they produce.”

Achieving a sense of progression in the mix through both his selections and his awareness of sonic space, Ring manages to harness his enthusiasms for frequency perfect soundscapes, often creating moments of sheer beauty out of his polarized composite parts.

“The mix isn’t that balanced when it comes to melody I guess,” he continues, considering his point. “There’s a lot of sweetness on there, but it is dark and mysterious at points. His music is located at some unspecified point between those two cities - bass heavy, sparse, full of atmosphere and with propulsive rhythms, but above all impossible to define. His label, Hotflush, is as hard-to-categorise as Warp was in the ’90s. He is, in a word, a maverick.

No surprise, then, that his DJ Kicks mix resists pigeon-holing. A mind-bending 32-track journey, it ranges from the doom-laden ambience of ‘HF029B2’ by Sigha, to the stripped down squelches and bleeps of ‘Acid Battery’ by Boddika and the muted keys of Jichael Mackson’s ‘Gedons’. It’s deep, a set that engages your mind as well as your feet. “It’s loosely based around the last couple of sets I’ve played at my club night, Sub:Stance, at Berghain in Berlin,” explains Rose. “It’s the last set of the night. It’s longer than the other sets. We tend to have lots of people playing for 90 minutes. But the last set is at least three hours or more, so you have more freedom. It’s really varied. You can play more or less anything and people will stay with you. That’s so special. A key thing I’ve been doing in those sets is starting off faster, say 138, and slowing down. It’s really gradual, slowing each tune down a little bit. The idea was to condense that three hour set into an hour. It drops about 12 bpm over the hour, from 136 to 124. Each tune is a little bit slower. I don’t like mixes that jump around, I prefer things to flow.”

“For me, ‘As We Drop’ by Addision Groove is one of the key tracks,” explains Rose. “It’s a fusion of two things, that urban, UK kind of sound, and something more techno. It sums up what the mix and my music is about.” Then there’s the ehcoing sound effects and moody techno groove of Mental Bright by Ludovic Vendi. Meanwhile, Rose points to the Breakup by Braille as another pivotal track. The skippety beats, jazzy keys and soulful male vocal are a 2011 update of the garage scene on which he cut his teeth, Rose grew up in London. He was in bands as a teenager during the mid-’90s. He was drawn to experimenting with computers, which led to techno, then drum’n’bass. He started a night in Bristol, where he went to university, called Hotflush. When he moved back to London in 2001, he started playing on pirate radio and launched his label despite having “no idea what I was doing”.

Rose says it quickly dawned on him that he was more interested in making music than playing it as a DJ. He was a regular at seminal London club night FWD>>, the birthplace of dubstep, from the very start, so when, in 2004, he made some minimal, bass heavy tracks under the name Scuba he passed them to FWD>> resident Hatcha, who loved them. Rose’s music quickly became a fixture on the then nascent dubstep scene. However, Rose never wanted his label to be all about dubstep, “it just happened by accident because of what we put out”. Hotflush has been going for eight years, but it’s only recently that it’s become the wide-ranging outlet he always envisaged.

The fact that he’s a Londoner living in Berlin in crucial to his sound. “As a DJ one of my primary aims and motivations is bridging the gap between what I guess people call the ‘urban’ or ‘post-dubstep’ scenes in London, although I hate both of those terms, and the more straight house/techno mainland European sound which obviously resonates most from Berlin. So much great music comes out of both of those two places and actually I find them very compatible sonically. As a producer I wouldn't say I fit into either particularly well though.” Probably not. The truth is, he’s taken the two elements to create something new entirely. “It’s been a while since I felt part of the dubstep thing,” agrees Rose. “I’m still friendly with a lot of the guys in London who were around it from the start, but it’s moved on so much since I was really involved as a producer or a DJ. I guess I would fit better into the techno thing, but I wouldn’t say that’s a perfect match either - both in terms of what I’m doing as a producer and a DJ, I just flit around too many styles really. I guess you could see that as a positive or a negative.” It is without question the former. Interesting things happen at the interface of scenes. Scuba is proof positive of that.

The much respected compilation series has seen everyone from Carl Craig and Hot Chip to Kode9 and Chromeo take to its decks in its 16 years and stepping forward to take on the latest instalment is last year's massive breakthrough story Gold Panda.

You're probably aware of the following already, but the story of the Peckham-born producer's 2010 bears repeating. Having stormed that year's Great Escape Festival in Brighton and earning US Summer tour supports with both HEALTH and Autolux, Derwin came back to the UK in October to find the nation's blogs and critics alike going crazy over his debut LP Lucky Shiner, with DJ Magazine giving it 9/10 and the NME describing it as ''just blissful''. The album eventually went onto be win the 2010 edition of The Guardian's First Album Award - for the finest debut LP to be released that year, and the introverted artist suddenly found himself thrust into the limelight.

The success has snowballed into this year, with headlining tours across Europe, the US and Australia cementing his rising reputation. The chance to take a step back from the relentless schedule and put his mind to use on the latest DJ-Kicks compilation then is a welcome change in pace, not that Derwin found it an easy transition to make; “I’d never consider myself a DJ, but through doing this I’ve really become more appreciative of it. I’ve so much more respect for people that do DJ now.”
He may have found it a challenge, but it doesn’t show on a 22 track mix (full tracklisting below) that weights perfectly between the bright awake and brooding nocturnal side of electronica – a sets that works best pulsing the headphones and emanating around the bedroom, rather than for the dancefloor. Lauded names like Zomby and Ramadanman are mixed in with new stars like Ninja Tune’s Matthew David and Berlin producer Pawel; “Tracks like Pawel’s ‘Coke’ and ‘Amstel’ by Opiate I sort of wanted to hide in the mix, hoping that people might go and find the original,” Derwin explains, “others I’ve gone for are because of the production; LV & Untold’s ‘Beacon,’ for instance, has all these little intricacies that makes it so interesting – [dubstep producer] Untold just seems to be a master at finding and building these lovely percussion sounds.”

The overall linear to the mix is the sense of strong melody that links all of the tracks within it; from Drexciya’s ‘Andraean Sandunes’ minimal 80s electro pop feel to Christopher Rau’s ‘Do Little,’ there’s a light touch applied throughout, counterbalanced by the more lo-freq friendly sounds of Nao Tokui’s ‘Monolith’ and ‘Shake’ by London techno producer Sigha. Altogether, the set showcases not only the breadth and depth of Derwin’s musical palette. But also an ability he’s already shown with his own material, including a brand new GP track ‘An Iceberg Hurtled Northward Through Clouds’ which opens and is exclusive to the mix and will also be committed to 12”, in keeping a constant momentum and freshness to proceedings. Of course, some tracks are simply in there because he loves them and couldn’t leave them out, “‘Puerto Rican Girls’ by Melchior & Prosanto has one of the loveliest hand claps ever, and then there’s ‘Maria’ by Closer Musik which has been a complete favourite of mine for a number of years.”

Though for Gold Panda the day job rumbles on, with an upcoming tour to Asia and the UK this October, Derwin may even the chance to sit down and work on a second album (“around Christmas time,” he speculates). It's a journey, it's educating the listener, it's telling a story. All those descriptions, hackneyed though they may be, apply to Erol Alkan's new 'Bugged Out' mix and 'Bugged In' selection, but they don't come close to capturing the indefinable magic that makes it sing. That comes from the sixth sense all great DJs have, the unconscious force that draws them to the next song, somehow knowing it will fit with the previous one even though it might seem unlikely. Call it musical clairvoyance, seeing into the sonic future. And no-one has the gift more than Alkan.

It's there from the start on CD1 of this two CD set - one side club-oriented, one aimed at home listening. He opens with the pulsing bass and twangy guitars of 'To Our Disco Friends' by Smith N Hack, a track that's ten years old, but which sounds bang up to date. He follows it with 'Sensation' by legendary Chicago house DJ Ron Hardy, then 'Gridlock' by In Flagranti. Who else would put those three tracks together, spanning three decades in the process? No-one, that's who.

Erol mixed the set live in a couple of takes, no computerised beat matching or studio trickery. Why? "For me, that's what DJing is about, spontaneity, mistakes, records trying to keep up with one another" he says. It took just two takes, as he was nearing the end of the second, the sub bass of Spandex's 'The Bull' shook the speaker off the mantelpiece of his music room at home and sent it crashing to the floor, leaving a deep dent in the floorboards. "I just thought, It's going so well I'm going to carry on," he laughs. "I didn't want to detract from capturing that moment. That's where - for me - the electricity lies: in the moment, not crafting something that's perfect on a computer." Of course, it's not the first time Erol has released a Bugged Out compilation. The current mix comes eight years after 2004's landmark 'A Bugged Out' mix, which defined the then nascent electro house scene, featuring music from the then relatively unknown Justice alongside Steve Bug and Roman Flugal. However, Erol feels that it was the second disc, the 'Bugged In' selection, that made the most impact. "The club mix was fine, it was representative of me evolving at that time, but it was the more gentle - and far more musical - mix that seems to have stayed with people over the years." The reason is simple enough. Erol is an obsessive crate-digger, both real world and virtual. He spends thousands of hours searching for lost gems. And his knowledge of music is encyclopaedic. He was keen that the 'Bugged In' disc have a similar impact this time round and spent time searching for the right songs. "The internet means that everyone has access to the same records these days, however many there are out there, there are a hundred times more which have yet to exist in digital form" he explains. "The only way to stand out is to find tracks that people have forgotten about, music which is off the beaten track. Then you have to assemble them into something that works as a whole."

It certainly does that. The 'Bugged In' disc is a revelatory listen. It starts with 'Don't You Know' by the Jan Hammer Group. Yes, that Jan Hammer, the one who composed the Miami Vice Theme. "That's what many people know him for, but in the late '70s he was considered the top electronic musician in the world," says Erol. "It's a beautiful record, and miles away from what people would expect from him." It's followed by 'Leipzig' by Matthew Herbert, which he describes as like "an electronic version of 'A Horse With No Name' by America, but documenting a trip to a night club rather then the desert." Perhaps the most surprising track is 'Major Tom (Coming Home)' by The Space Lady, an electronic cover version of Peter Schilling's 1983 hit song performed by a Los Angeles busker and sourced by Erol on cassette. How's that for hunting down an obscurity.

Looking at the two CDs as a whole, Erol sees them as a statement of where his head is currently at. "It's an exciting time right now," he says. "It feels like the year 2000, just before electroclash happened. Not the sound of the music as such, but the way that all these different strands of music are coming together."

It's an interesting thought. As a taste maker, he's uniquely placed to make such predictions. Either way, his 'Bugged Out' mix is an exhilarating document, club music at it's most urgent and irresistible, the 'Bugged In' selection is after hour sounds at their most dreamlike. I wrote the album with the ideal that it would be listened to as a whole piece from start to end. As a result I wanted to touch on all the different tempos and styles I love to give it a real range of mood, yet underpin it all with a feeling of ‘future soul’. I’ve always been captivated and inspired by the music of Detroit – the machine driven funk of motor city techno combined with the introspective, melancholic soul of Motown is, for me, a combination that continually proves irresistible. Hopefully some of this long-term love-affair seeps into the album.”

The album’s title Getting Closer refers quite literally to its creation process, which was distilled through a number of collaborative layers. “I was getting closer to the people involved in the album whilst getting closer to the sound of the album I had in my head” says Will. “Writing music with someone can be a very intimate and rewarding process, or it can be really hard work and emotionally draining, or none of the above – either way you learn about yourself and the other person involved”.

The recording started in Brighton with Fink – one of Will’s oldest friends. The pair recorded a number of live takes of Fink’s band (drummer and bass player) which formed the early sketches that were sent to the featured vocalists – Joe Dukie of Fat Freddies Drop, Tikiman, Charlene Soraia and Fink himself. The songs that came back were then developed further in a heavily electronic setting – a windowless world of analogue toys and geekery - in the studio of Will’s long term production partner, Tam Cooper. Some of the vocalists came into the studio to record final versions, some sent the music from far flung locations. At this stage there was a finished album of sorts but Will wanted to push the tracks further from his comfort zone and reached out to friends Scuba, October, Appleblim, Ewan Pearson and Tanner Ross and the collaboration continued…. Working in this way means each artist has added their own identity to a project tightly helmed by Will, it has been a mutual dialogue where artists have grown ever closer. The unique resulting concept is a dynamic body of work that is set to come even more to life in the live arena.

The album was certainly conceived with live performance in mind, and as such Bristol producer Al Tourettes has been brought in to play live drums, and a team at Silent Studios has designed an accompanying AV show which will extrapolate the music’s intimacy, warmth and detail into brand new, extra-sensory stimulating territory in a way that few yet have in the electronic realm. Even more than just a collaborative work, then, Getting Closer is an album that draws together many artistic disciplines into one new and exciting concept that hopes to lead the way in avant-guard electronic music and live performance.
